Wednesday 7 August. Coswig to Vockerode.

We left Coswig slghtly later than normal, about 9:10am but by the time we found our way to the ferry at Coswig we were much later. It was a much better walking day being much cooler than yesterday and overcast.

The first photo shows the town square at Coswig followed by what looks a bit like a gallows. It is in fact the support for a bell that was probably used to summon the ferry man.   The next photo shows the ferry arriving at the Coswig side and the one after that is a photograph taken in the middle of the Elbe looking towards Coswig.

I chatted with the ferryman, as best I could, and apparently the ferry is powered from one side to the other just by the water in the Elbe flowing downstream no engine is used.

The cobbled road running south from the ferry was boarded by a sealed cycle track and this morning at least it was covered in snails. They were probably brought out by the heavy rain last night. Sadly a lot of them got squashed by cyclists, cars and trucks. Yes cars and trucks moved over to use the cycle track as well in preference to the cobbles!! Some cars, even a 4x4wd using all the track and at least one truck running with one side of wheels on the cycle track. A side view of Shiel with her pack reminded sme that we must look somewhat like snails.

We passed some nice old country houses before arriving in Woerlitz, a very beautiful old town with a pleasant spa like feel to it. Just outside we met a chap and his wife on bicycles. He said he was 80+ and German but if he hadn't said it I would have sworn he was an Englishman from somewhere north of Leicester. An interesting chap with an interesting accent. I would have liked to have spent longer listening to him.

We spent a lot of the walk surrounded by water, and hence mosquitoes, and because of the water it reminded me a lot of the Somerset Levels on my JOGLE walk.

The last photo was taken as it reminded me of my friend Pio, Flame's bete noir, at RDA.

We are staying in Vockerode at a German pub called,  Zum Kleinen Landhaus where we also had our evening meal. For dessert I had a Bee Sting. Shiel said she didn't want a dessert but she still managed to eat a third of my Bee Sting! It was very good eating but one of those cases where a literal translation simply doesn't work.
